Countdown to ANH Academy Week 2017: Learning lab on measuring women's empowerment
Are you hoping to integrate measures of women’s empowerment into your work? A4NH researchers Hazel Malapit, Jessica Heckert, and Elena Martinez will present a Learning Lab about using the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) in nutrition-sensitive agricultural projects at the upcoming ANH Academy Week in Kathmandu.
The WEAI, released in 2012, is a comprehensive, standardized measure of women’s empowerment in the agricultural sector. Now, the second phase of the Gender, Agriculture, and Assets Project (GAAP2) is working to develop the project-level WEAI (pro-WEAI), a measure that can be used to diagnose and monitor women’s empowerment in agricultural development projects.
During the session, participants will learn about:
• Why gender and women’s empowerment matter in nutrition-sensitive agricultural projects
• How WEAI and pro-WEAI data is collected and used to diagnose and monitor empowerment
• How pro-WEAI measures empowerment in nutrition and health
• How pro-WEAI combines qualitative and quantitative research to better understand empowerment
The session will also highlight five nutrition-sensitive projects from the GAAP2 portfolio that are currently using the pro-WEAI qualitative and quantitative tools. Participants will work together to examine a project in detail; explore the project’s potential impacts and how it can use pro-WEAI to measure empowerment; and practice using the pro-WEAI survey modules.
The Agriculture, Nutrition & Health (ANH) Academy in partnership with the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Nutrition will jointly host the 2nd Agriculture, Nutrition and Health (ANH) Academy week and the 5th Annual Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Nutrition (Nutrition Innovation Lab) Agriculture-Nutrition Scientific Symposium on 9-13 July 2017 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
